Community Analysis
along the April 27-28, 2011 Tornado Tracks in Georgia
The
definitive public source for meteorological information about the April 27-28,
2011 tornadoes in Georgia is the National Weather Service (NWS)- Peachtree City, Georgia summary. The
tracks analyzed and presented here were obtained from NWS tornado tracks as
provided to and used by the Georgia Emergency Management Agency at the State
Operations Center during the week of May 8-14, 2011. The NWS tracks used by
GEMA were more accurate than those presented in KML format on the
aforementioned NWS web site (version of May 11, 2011). This was confirmed by
FEMA-mapped damage assessments and NOAA’s Local Storm Reports.
This
analysis used the reported tornado widths reported by NWS to produce a
corresponding polygon buffer along the tornado track lines, but only on the
Georgia segments of those tornadoes that originated in Alabama or continued
into Tennessee. The tornado swaths were then overlaid on other block
group-level maps of demographic and economic information using ESRI’s Community
Analyst (CA) planning software. Two standard reports were generated for
each tornado track: the CA Executive
Summary report provides Census 2010 information on population, income,
households, and housing; the Business
Summary report provides information on the types and number of businesses
and employees along the tornado swaths. Some tornado tracks were in such rural
areas that the population and or businesses were listed as zero (In areas with
only a single person, household, and/or business establishments the Census
Bureau redacts this information for confidentiality purposes.). Although the
community analysis produced three null reports for such sparsely inhabited
areas, one of them, the Polk-Floyd-Greene tornado swath, caused four reported
injuries.
Comparison reports for all of the tornado track
areas were also generated, detailing Population, Total Housing, Housing
Ownership, and Income. Maps and Air Photo views from CA are also provided for
all tracks.
